The archaeological park

The archaeological park of Selinunte is considered one of the most vast and stately of Europe: it covers an area of 1,740 square kilometers and includes numerous temples, sanctuaries and altars.

The ruins of Selinunte are divided into three principle areas: the Malophoros Sanctuary, the Acropolis, and the western hillside.

The Malophoros
The sanctuary of Demeter Malophoros, who, together with her daughter Persephone, was very popular cult in Sicily. The Acropolis
The acropolis was for the use of the divinity. During the Greek-Punic epoch, a part of this area was utilized as a residential area.

The western hillside
Temples E, F and G are situated in this location. Temple G is one of the largest of all Greek temples. In the proximity of the archaeological area connected to CAM is the Gaggera sanctuary dedicated to Demeter Malophoros (6th and 5th centuries B.C.) where a second entrance to the great Archaeological complex of Selinunte will soon be opened.

Just beyond the extensive setting of Castelvetrano, where the above mentioned sites are located, is the notable archaeological site of the Cave of Cusa, situated in the territory of Campobello di Mazara. Places from which materials were obtained for the building of the ancient city of Selinunte may be viewed even today by visitors.
